There is a safe trail which leads down to the pools below, however the walk is a steep one and not for the fainthearted, and remember you have to walk back up!
Historically Howick was the place where Nelson Mandela was arrested in 1962 and this is now encapsulated by the Nelson Mandela Capture and Memorial Site. Howick remains predominantly a farming town that supplies the surrounding farms.
