Howick is located in the heart of the Midlands in KwaZulu Natal. Known for its many waterfalls, Howick is a peaceful town ideal for those wishing to escape the city life. Warm summers and cool winters, which can turn chilly when there are snowfalls on the nearby Drakensberg, Howick is a great destination throughout the year.
The most well-known landmark for the town is Howick Falls – the Umgeni River falling approximately 95m over cliffs enroute to the Indian Ocean. If abseiling down the Falls is not your thing, then a beautiful viewing platform is situated above the Falls for some magnificent views. There is a safe trail which leads down to the pools below, however the walk is a steep one and not for the fainthearted, and remember you have to walk back up!
Historically Howick was the place where Nelson Mandela was arrested in 1962 and this is now encapsulated by the Nelson Mandela Capture and Memorial Site. Howick remains predominantly a farming town that supplies the surrounding farms.
Tourism plays a role here as the town forms part of the Midlands Meander, a famous scenic drive through the Midlands. The Midlands Meander leads from Pietermaritzburg to the Drakensberg Mountains, a lovely drive past forests, through pretty little towns in which have many arts and craft outlets that are well worth stopping for.
